Tips for Avoiding Tooth Cracks When You’re Aligning Your Teeth With Braces

Posted .

When you are on your orthodontic journey, there are many things that can keep you from your perfect smile, like a broken appliance, damaged teeth, decayed teeth, and tooth cracks. This is because dental issues complicate the treatment process. Eventually, you can achieve the smile of your dreams, but dental issues can delay your treatment time. So, it’s best to avoid dental issues altogether. Today, our orthodontist, Dr. Doctors, is happy to tell you how to avoid tooth cracks. You can do the following things:

-Don’t chew on pens, pencils, ice, or your fingernails: Chewing on these things can fracture your tooth enamel because it applies unnatural pressure to the chompers. Oftentimes, your teeth can’t handle the pressure and then they give in, which is when the crack forms. It’s best to avoid chewing on these things altogether.

-Use fluoride: Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens the tooth enamel. The stronger your enamel is, the less chance you have of fracturing your tooth enamel. So, expose your teeth to fluoride regularly by using fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, drinking fluoridated tap water, and receiving a professional fluoride treatment.

-Wear a mouthguard: A mouthguard is a handy appliance that protects your teeth when hard objects hit them. So, if you participate in high-contact sports or activities, please wear a mouthguard while doing so. That way you can avoid tooth cracks.
